The Wood That Sings
'The Wood That Sings' is my most recent studio recording. In this all acoustic affair, the cd journeys along a diverse and dynamic musical highway incorporating a range of styles that sit most comfortably under a world music umbrella. The opening track 'Exodus' is a spirited east meets west piece that was inspired by a study of the book of Exodus, a sacred Jewish writing found in the Old Testament.
Included in four of the tracks are the evocative vocals of Anne Maree Keefe. Anne Maree sings Hebrew lyrics to give the songs an other worldly element, somewhat Enya-esque in flavour. All of the tracks from the ballads to the more lively are led by strong melodic content accompanied with an injection of subtle musical nuance.
Isaac Barter adds some rhythmic spice on the Cd with percussion and kit. I discovered a new instrument called a tenor ukulele prior to this cd and it's interesting tonal colours feature on many of the songs. My old (circa 1880) favourite the five string dble bass is also also featured on many of the tracks including a free bowed improvisation titled 'Clouds''.
A quaint toe tapping African flavoured song titled 'The Colour She Speaks' has some playful elements; introducing the track is a vocal motif by my 8 yr old daughter Anna. I also captured a sprinkling of her laughter on the track that reminds me of her middle name Joy.
